Medicine: “the art of prolonging life by artificial means.”–HM
Catalepsy/Cataleptic: a medical condition characterized by a trance or seizure with a loss of sensation and consciousness accompanied by a rigidity of the body. (Mesmerists put people into this sort of trance).
Chorea: a neurological disorder marked by jerky involuntary movements affecting esp. the shoulders, hips and face. From the greek for “dancing in unison.”
Cicatrice/Cicatrix: the scar of a healed wound.
Coiffure: a person’s hairstyle, typically an elaborate one. [Flaubert]
Delerium Tremens – a psychotic condition typical of withdrawal in chronic alcoholics, involving tremors, hallucinations, anxiety, and disorientation.
Jowl: the lower part of a person or animal’s cheek, esp. when it is fleshy or drooping. Also the dewlap of cattle or the wattle of birds.
Hoyden: n. a boisterous girl. Hoydenish.
Low: v. of a cow, to make a characteristic deep sound. A moo.
Megrims: 1. (megrims) depression; low spirits. 3. An old-fashioned term for migraine.
Orris / Orrisroot: a preparation of the fragrant rootstock of an iris, used in perfumery and formerly in medicine.
Paregoric: a medicine consisting of opium flavored with camphor, aniseed and benzoic acid, formerly used to treat diarrhea and coughing in children.
Pneumatic: (of certain body parts, esp. a woman’s breasts) large, as if inflated.
Raddled: (of a person or their face) showing signs of aging or fatigue. From raddle in the sense (rouge,) by association with its exaggerated use in makeup. Raddle/Ruddle: a red pigment consisting of ocher.
Scrofula/scrofulous: a disease with glandular swellings. AKA King’s Evil.
Slattern: a dirty, untidy woman. “that slatternly look of hair that has been dyed and then left to grow.” (Maugham)
Tisane: an herbal tea, consumed esp. for its medicinal properties. (Proust)
Wasserman Test: blood test to detect syphilis.
